I got a response to my question below, the the person decided to answer on the rec.crafts.meadmaking newsgroup instead of here.
In the newsgroup, Thirsty Viking said..."Well it is a start. I answer questions at www.gotmead.com in the new bee section on a regular basis. if your under an air lock and it doesn't over flow. rack your cyser at about 4-5 weeks. Not much reason to rack before that when under an airlock."
: Well, I'm a little over a week into making my first batch of mead. I'm making a cyser, and I started in a carboy, rather than a primary bucket, which I now know is a mistake. Question is, how long should I wait before I rack it into a clean carboy? Should I want until signs of active fermentation stop? or should I do it sooner?
